Understanding BMI and Body Composition in Men
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a universal health measurement that estimates body fat based on weight and height. For men, tracking BMI is a useful starting point to identify potential weight-related cardiovascular and metabolic health risks.
Male BMI Categories
The World Health Organization uses standard BMI categories for adult men: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), Overweight (25.0 to 29.9), and Obese (30.0 and above). Men carrying excess weight, especially visceral fat around the abdomen, have an increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
Muscle Mass and the BMI Limitations
A major limitation of BMI for men is that it does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Because men typically have higher muscle mass than women, and muscle is denser than fat, muscular men or athletes may be classified as 'overweight' or 'obese' by BMI, despite having very low body fat percentages. For a more accurate evaluation, combine BMI with waist circumference and body fat measurements.
